Report from the Coronation
Hundleby Coronation Celebrations
Hundleby Parish Council (HPC) invited parishioners to an open village meeting in
February. Many attended and a Parish Councillor led Coronation Working Party was
formed. We agreed on our approach and made a plan. We set it out in a newsletter that
went to every house and on to social media. We published our documents on the HPC
website as they were produced. We adopted the King’s themes of multi-faith, community,
volunteers, diversity and environment.
We achieved our plan. We spruced up the village and The Hundleby Inn fed us. We
decorated with bunting & crowns of natural materials. We gave away 140 packets of
wildflower seeds to sow in village gardens and verges. We held the Coronation Cafe
serving free ice cream, teas, cakes, vegan cake & celebration cake. The marquee outside
the Parish Rooms was dressed in red, white and blue. Inside was green and white with
wild and garden flowers. We hung bunting, ivy and clematis from the shaker rail. The new
Community Choir sang songs from each decade of the King’s life. People joined in the
singing. The place was packed out and the kitchen rushed off its feet. We took
photographs to distribute and archive. We received donations of £133. 25 towards future
Hundleby community events. We spent under £60, bunting at £17.50. Flags, serviettes,
Coronation stickers for seeds and donation buckets was £ 41.91 with VAT due back.
St Mary’s Church was open, hosting many children and adults. They searched for the
jewels that HOPE hid in the Church and enjoyed the displays. The Hundleby Footpath
Preservation Society organised a walk to Old Bolingbroke and back.
Conclusions
Hundleby enjoys a strong tradition of people working together for community events. We
built on this foundation welcoming contributions from new people. People give generously
of their time, energy and resources. It takes a lot of work from a lot of people to put on an
event. It takes a little bit of magic to make it special.
We believe the wildflower seeds will create a lasting legacy of the day. We have made
memories and the new Facebook Community Page. It has attracted 174 members, 37
posts, 97 comments, 456 reactions and been viewed by 2750 people. The Community
Choir is continuing and has been invited to perform at two events.
